Video as Public Space #4: TikTok, from the Image to the Voice

How TikTok turns the voice into something that can pass from one body to another.

Recorded voices have traveled independently of their speakers since long before TikTok. What the platform makes central is their repeated reassignment: the same sound is performed by different bodies, in different situations.

The essay asks what this does to the relationship between performer and audience, and why social media also need to be understood through poetry and music.
