Breath, Spirit, and Atmospheres — a graduate seminar

A course on breath, spirit, atmosphere, and ki, taught at Kobe University.

I designed and taught this graduate seminar across European and East Asian philosophy and literature. It begins with ancient accounts of breath and spirit and follows their changing relationships to the body, thought, and the environment.

The course moves from Greek and East Asian sources through Augustine and Descartes to modern poetry and contemporary Atmospheric and Respiratory Studies. Readings include Shelley, Verlaine, Hofmannsthal, and Bashō, alongside discussions of ecology and the politics of breathing.
