“Poetry and Breath: The Role of Air in Modern European Poetry.”

How Shelley and Verlaine use breath, wind, and air to rethink the relationship between spirit and the material world.

The chapter follows a change from Romanticism to Symbolism. Shelley’s wind moves between material air and spiritual inspiration; in Verlaine, the boundary between the feeling self and the surrounding air begins to dissolve.
