“Kireji, Caesura, Atmosphere: A Preliminary Cross-Cultural and Philosophical Comparison”

A comparison of Japanese cutting words and European caesuras through Nishitani and Agamben.

Both devices interrupt a poem, but a kireji is a word or exclamation, not simply a pause. The article asks how these cuts bring the poem into contact with an atmosphere, rather than merely expressing the poet’s mood.
