“Res Intensa: Augustine, Descartes, and the Inclusive Exclusion of Breath.”

Why the separation of mind and body in Descartes repeats an earlier move in Augustine.

In both thinkers, breath is excluded from the definition of mind but retained as a bodily mechanism. The chapter follows this relationship through the history of intentio. Its proposed name, res intensa, draws attention to that history within Descartes’ thinking thing.
