Philosophy of breath

What changes when philosophy begins with breathing?

Breath has often fallen between two accounts of human life: the body as a biological mechanism, and the mind or spirit as something separate from it. Yet breathing complicates that division. It happens without our deciding to breathe, can become a deliberate gesture, and continually passes between our bodies and the world.

pneuma Greek: Breath or spirit; for the Stoics, a material substance.

The renewed philosophical interest in breath opens questions about how we think, live together, and understand our relations with other living beings. My work brings this respiratory philosophy into conversation with new materialisms, traditions of the voice, and different cultural understandings of breath.

atmosphere English: The air around us, and the mood or feeling of a place.

But returning to breath is not enough. Making it the ultimate explanation of everything could reproduce the very habits of thought this return was meant to question. The challenge is to rethink life through breathing without turning breath into another absolute spirit.
