Voice, language, and philosophy

What remains of the voice when philosophy treats language mainly as meaning?

My work follows a debate about the voice between French and Italian philosophy. Colli, Agamben, Cavarero, and Coccia offer different responses to Derrida, bringing the material voice and breath back into the discussion.

pneuma Greek: Breath or spirit; a central term in the debate about the material voice.

Poetry is part of this debate, not just an example of it. In Caproni, names, wind, and exclamations raise philosophical questions about the voice before some of the better-known discussions of it.

interjection Language: An exclamation, such as “oh” or “ah,” that does not work like an ordinary statement.

More recent work brings Italian and Japanese philosophy together. It asks whether voice can be understood as the place where things appear, before they are divided into sound and meaning.

khôra Greek: A term for place or receptacle, reconsidered in this work through the voice.
