Modern poetry and the material world

Why is modern poetry so full of breath, wind, and air?

My research starts from a contrast. Poetry has often been understood as the expression of an inner spirit, yet modern poems repeatedly return to material breath and the air outside us.

spirit A historical question: A word once connected to breath, whose separation from matter is part of this research.

In Shelley, wind moves between physical air and spiritual inspiration. Verlaine and Hofmannsthal take this further: feeling no longer belongs only to an inner self, but takes shape through sound, bodies, and their surroundings.

Stimmung German: Mood or attunement, explored here through nerves, poetry, and atmosphere.

I read these poems as ways of thinking about our material relationship with the world. This work forms a JSPS-funded research project and extends into a comparison with Japanese poetry.
