The Intention of the Breath: From Breath to Spirit, from Intention to Atmosphere

A history of intention, from material breath to immaterial spirit and modern ideas of atmosphere.

Before intention meant the will or attention of a mind, intentio named the tension of material breath. This book follows the transformation of that concept through Stoicism, Augustine, Descartes, nineteenth-century psychology, and modern poetry.

Its central argument is that the history of intention cannot be separated from the history of breath. Read through that history, atmosphere offers a way to reconsider the relationship between thought, the body, and the world.
