“Stimmung, Nerves, and Atmosphere: Towards a Somaesthetic Understanding of Poetry.”
How the history of nerves and atmosphere changes the way we understand poetry.
Reading Hermann Bahr and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the chapter follows Stimmung from the physiology of nerves to the atmosphere around us. It asks how poetry places feeling in the relationship between bodies and their surroundings, rather than inside an isolated mind.
