“Intentio Spiritus: The Materialist, Pneumatological Origins of Intention in Augustine.”

How Augustine transforms the material tension of breath into an activity of the immaterial soul.

The article traces Augustine’s intentio back to Stoic accounts of breath. It argues that he transforms this material tension into attention and will by separating the soul from air and the body.
