How intention moved from the material breath of the Stoics to Augustine’s immaterial soul.

For the Stoics, the tension of breath held bodies together and made life possible. In Augustine, intention becomes an activity of the soul, while the air moving through the body is made to serve its will. The paper traces this transformation: how a concept of material tension became a way to separate spirit from breath.
