Philosophy, literature, and the arts

How does a place feel—and where does that feeling belong?

An atmosphere is not simply a feeling inside a person or a property of the objects around them. My research asks how it arises between bodies and their surroundings, through philosophy, literature, and the arts.

atmosphere Everyday language and philosophy: The air around us, and the felt character of a place or situation.

I follow the histories of words such as Stimmung, ambiance, and intention to recover their connections to material air. This also means asking what is lost when atmosphere becomes only a metaphor for a state of mind.

Stimmung German: A word for mood and attunement, used of people as well as places.

European and East Asian sources offer different ways to approach these questions. My work brings them into conversation through poetry, the arts, and contemporary experiences of atmosphere, including those shaped by digital media.
