Philosophy, literature, and the arts

Where does a feeling happen?

A tense room or a quiet evening can affect us before we have put the feeling into words. Such experiences trouble the idea that emotions belong entirely inside us. An atmosphere involves our bodies and the situation around them, without being simply a private feeling or a property of an object.

atmosphere Everyday language and philosophy: The air around us, and the felt character of a place or situation.

My research connects this question with the histories of breath, bodily tension, and musical attunement. Words such as Stimmung and ambiance preserve parts of those histories, but their relationship becomes harder to recognize once thought and feeling are understood as an inner life detached from the air.

Stimmung German: A word for mood and attunement, used of people as well as places.

Reading Leo Spitzer and Hermann Schmitz alongside the older history of intention brings that relationship back into view. Schmitz already recognized the Stoic account of tension in his study of the felt body. I follow the further history through which that tension became the attention and will of a separate mind.

This does not mean that atmospheres are simply physical air. It means reconsidering how we came to separate feeling, thinking, and breathing—and what changes when we understand them through our involvement in a world.
